At some point in your life, the nurse has uttered those words and sent you in the direction of the lavatory. Have you ever wondered what a urine test reveals about your health? More than 100 tests may be done on urine, a liquid produced by the kidneys to flush minerals, fluids and hundreds of different wastes from the body.
The color, clarity and odor of urine offer information about your general health, diet and health concerns such as diabetes or dehydration. The amount of solid matter, the acidity, the amount of protein and sugar, and other microscopic items in urine may indicate bladder, urinary tract or kidney problems, including infections.
Don’t be shy. If your doctor’s ordered a urine test, ask what lab results he or she has asked for and what they measure. Curiosity can help you take good care of yourself.
